He was famous for his palette knife technique, which he was the first to use to cover an entire canvas. Apart from that, his vision is that of a disciple of the great realists of the 17th century, Caravaggio and the Spaniards. Because of his subjects, Delacroix appears romantic. By his colorful polyphony and by his expressive drawing, he goes much further than Courbet, opens up many more paths than him. At their beginnings, Manet, Monet and Renoir seem to continue the master of Ornans; as soon as their personalities assert themselves and blossom, we discover that they are much more the heirs of Delacroix than of Courbet. When Courbet was hard at work, Baudelaire and the Goncourts had already demanded that artists express the beauty of modern life. Courbet, although protesting his realism, does not worry about it.
