California is occupied by Spain, with the title to the land becoming vested, under the Laws of the Indies, in the King of Spain
Spain's pioneering land expedition, commanded by Gaspar de Por-tolá of the Spanish Army, traveled north along the coast toward San Francisco Bay after leaving San Diego on July 14, 1769. There were in the party scouts, leaders, two priests, an engineer, mounted soldiers, muleteers, Christian Indians from Baja California, and a packtrain of one hundred loaded mules, together with spare animals.
