Recently I asked the Geological Survey
TO
estigate South Dakota areas for potential
open pit mining of gold. The Survey and the Bureau of Mines,
under a new hard
metals exploration program, are looking for sites for open pit gold mines where
mass
techniques can be used to lower production costs, Homestake Mine's under.
ground mining costs are now absorbing nearly all of the $35 an ounce ceiling price
of gold. We are attempting to get relief from this ceiling which might otherwise
force this important company to curtail operations.
An open pit gold mine in Nevada
is now reportedly producing
gold at $10 an
ounce from a moderate grade of ore.
Another
site naS
been
explored at Cripple Creek, Colorado.
South Dakota may nave
an open pit possibility, and such prospects should be
valure.
