Now an
election is scheduled for September 3 to demonstrate that we have achieved
self-determination for the South Vietnamese people.
Tam frankly
skentical about the
signiticance of this election, considering tactics that have been used by the existing
regime in Saigon to freeze out its competition.
7 of the
10 civilian candidates for
President are boycotting the election,
charging fraud and intimidation by General Kv
former president. the country's Finance Director,
and candidates advocating
settlement
of the wa
+ have
been barred from the ballot.
One
wonders if this kind of
"freedom' is worth the death of the 15,000 voung Americans who have already been
killed.
I am disturbed by the corruption, the unpopularity, and high-handed tactics
of the regimes we have been backing in Saigon
