Joe altered his course of studies and decided to become a teacher. He finished his stud-is and graduated with his first teaching job at the District school in Putnam County, Ohio. It was while in Ohio that he met Anna Mary Ellerbrock. They were mamed August 9, 1883 in Glandorf, Ohio.
Joseph had a love of teaching, music, and in later years, developed a skill of photography. His teaching assignments took him to New Albany, Indiana, Grand Rapids, Michigan and eventually returned to Ohio as the teacher, organist and sexton (church caretaker) at St. John's Parish in Maria Stein.
It was in this community that Joe raised his family, worked hard and developed the idea of the first successful mechanical manure spreader. It is also the place of his death, of typhoid. After helping his ive oldest children fight the disease, Joe fell to it in 901.
