If you have wondered just what the
initial "D" in the name of trainer D. Wayne Lukas stands for, you should be wondering no more after last year's victory by Robert and Beverly Lewis' longshot Charismatic in Kentucky Derby 125.
The "D" in D. Wayne simply has to stand for Derby. There is no way it could represent anything else.
Sure, his birth certificate will tell you that it is the first letter in his given first name, Darrell. But the Derby win by Charismatic was the fourth by a Lukas-trained horse. It tied him for second on the all-time list of Derby winning trainers with
H. J. Thompson, who saddled a quartet of Derby winners in the 1920's and '30's.
Fans ignored Thompson's
initials and called him "Derby Dick." So, there is historical precedent for adding
"Derby" to the name of the greatest Derby trainer of the 1990's.
