The year was 1948, but legendary trainer Jimmy Jones remembers events leading up to Citation's Triple Crown campaign as if it were yes terday. "He'd won seven straight, includ ing the Belmont Futurity the previous fall. No horse had ever won the Futurity and the Kentucky Derby. Beat older horses at the beginning of his 3-year old year. Won the Flamingo by six. I'll never forget (jockey) Al Snider in the winner's circle that day-big grin on his face. A few days later Al goes fishing with some friends off the Florida coast. A storm blew up and took 'em out to sea. They were never seen again."
