Kentucky Derby Official Program 123rd Saturday May 3, 1997 Churchill Downs TH7
Few Kentucky Derbys have had as exciting a finish as over Cavonnier by the slimmest of margins. Few horses have exhibited the kind of courage that allowed Grindstone to turn an honest effort on what turned out to be an aching knee into a moment reserved for heroes.
Inside the eighth pole Cavonnier and jockey Chris McCarron appeared to have the 122nd Derby won after collaring favored Unbridled's Song midway through the stretch. But Grindstone came flying on the outside in the final furlong, gobbling up ground under fierce left-handed whipping from Jerry Bailey while drifting farther and farther to the outside of the track.
The two horses were so far apart when they simultaneously arrived at the finish line that it was impossible for the frenzied crowd of 142,668, the third-largest in Derby history, to tell who had won.
