Kentucky Derby Official Program 122nd Saturday May 4, 1996 Churchill Downs TH7
There was a time, not
all that long ago, it wasn't that difficult to pick the winner of the Kentucky Derby. Favorites came in with greater-than-normal regularity, results were rarely shocking. Once upon a time it actually was quite easy to pick the winner of the world's most famous race. One
method was to consult the short list of horses who had run first or second in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.
Indeed, from 1959 through 1982, 11 Derby's were won by horses who fit the Blue Grass bill, including Tomy Lee;
Decidedly, (at 8-1); Chateaugay (at 9-1); Northern Dancer;
Lucky Debonair; Proud Clarion (at 30-1); Forward Pass;
Dust Commander (at 15-1); Riva Ridge; Spectacular Bid; and finally, Gato Del Sol an outrageous 21-1 in 1982, when Linkage, the horse who defeated him in the Blue Grass, was withdrawn from Derby consideration.
