In the darkness of a winter's night, a newborn colt, looking nothing like an animal born to run, struggles instinctively to stand upright on uncertain legs. He falls awkwardly in the straw stall bedding, blinks, struggles again to his feet and moves gingerly, one tentative step at a time, to his mother's side. Every Kentucky Derby winner's journey begins on wobbly legs.
The mare lowers her head and sniffs the colt as he approaches, panting from the struggle, then licks her new son, clearing the residue of birth from his eyes and nose. The colt presses his muzzle against her side,
searching
for the
secure
warmth of a full udder- a teat and nourishment.
