Seems like the University of
Iowa's 1984 football team had 'em all in this season that winds up today at the inaugural Freedom Bowl football game.
Coming off a 9-3 season in 1983 that included a 14-6 loss to Florida in the Gator Bowl-Iowa's third straight bowl game -coach Hayden Fry wasn't too certain how good his team might be. Almost the entire defense was returning, but there were a lot of question marks to be answered on offense.
The season began with a game against in-state rival Iowa State. The Hawkeyes were fairly heavy favorites, but no one expected anything like the
59-21 margin it turned out to be. Iowa took advantage of eight Iowa State turnovers and gave the first indications of the big play team it was to become.
