For the past three decades the Nebraska football program has been the model of stability, consistency and excellence in collegiate athletics. Those qualities were established by Coach Bob Devaney, then carried for a quarter century by his successor, Tom Osborne.
That stability is the primary reason that on Dec. 10, 1997, just moments after Osborne announced his retirement, Frank Solich was named the 26th head coach in Nebraska's 108 years of football tradition. Solich follows the Nebraska model for success. Just as Osborne was groomed by Devaney to be the head coach, Solich was Osborne's heir-apparent for several seasons.
