The Spartan, Badger and City of Midland have a speed of 18 miles an
hour and can carry 500 passengers, 26 railroad cars and 25 to 50
automobiles. The ships are air conditioned and equipped with the
latest safety devices including radar, radio direction finders, ship-to-
shore telephones and many water-tight bulkheads. The bows of the
ships are reinforced to serve as ice breakers during the winter months.
