Charley Talks About Himself
"Country music made an impression on me when I was five or six years old. We my family and I - would pick cotton all week, and on Saturday nights wed gather around an old Philco radio and tune in the Grand Ole Opry. We lived in Sledge, Missis-sippi, about 275 miles from Nashville, and WSM boomed right into Sledge. I heard the music and got hung up on it. As I got older, I sang along with the radio.
"My mother ordered my first guitar for me from Sears and Roebuck. It was a Silvertone.
There was no one out where we lived to show me how to tune it, so sat by the radio and tuned it straight across, E chord, and barred every change I made. I played guitar like that until started to record. Jo Walker of the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville asked me recently if still have that guitar.
