My full name is Allen Leroy Shade. . .born in Gratz. Pa. . .the oldest son of Marlin and Erma Shade...for years my Dad worked as an independent coal miner (or bootlegger) as they were called in those days.

I remember him coming home late at night, all wet, black and dirty.. many times he left at 4:00 a.m. in the morning.. it was a tough life. . .in those days my parents were very poor. ..I can still recall when my Dad only earned $5.00 per week, and some weeks nothing.
I remember my mother crying many times when we had no money ... to supplement his income my Dad used to make moonshine ..
If the milk man was thirsty, we got I quart of milk.
if he was extra thirsty we got two quarts . ..
