THE CHIEFS ARE BACK
THE CHIEFS loom as the most impressive club in the expanded six-team International Roller Derby League. Charlie O'Connell, the skate-game's superstar the past dozen years, will serve as both general manager and player-coach of the team, based out of New York's Madison Square Garden. His roster includes all-time scoring great Dynamite Mike Gammon and his wife, popular Judi McGuire, along with current Rookie-of-the-Year Ronnie Nelson and 1970 freshman award winner Tony Smith a giant at 6'2" and 194 Ibs.
Husky Bill Groll, former coach of the Pioneers, promises to be O'Connell's main backup skater.
The distaff squad is topped by veteran Sandy Dunn, the I.R.D.L. 's Most Valuable Player in 1969, along with New York State's 1963 flat-tract speed champ, Maureen O'Brien. Among the league's future stars is young Eddie Dombek, who's been compared with the legendary Hank Goldberg
