The history of such people can be told in one of two ways.

Or it can select for the telling the out of the ordinary incidents that must occur in every lifetime. For no man can live out his allotted time without having spent at least one day or one hour in the sun.
Those about whom these stories are written were, for the most part, ordinary individuals, no different from the Californians of today except for the time in which they lived. History is most pleasant to read when it is enriched by the human failings and successes of those who lived it.
