CONNECTING
MICHIGAN'S
UPPER AND
LOWER PENINSULAS
AT ST. IGNACE AND MACKINAW CITY.
The Mackinac Bridge has the world's longest total suspension span - 8,344 feet from cable anchorage to cable anchorage.
There were more obstacles overcome and problems solved in designing and building the Mackinac Bridge than have hitherto been encountered in any comparable project. Yet it is one of the safest and most beautiful spans ever built.
Thirty-three marine foundations support the four mile long uninterrupted steel superstruc-ture. All the piers go down to bedrock. The two huge tower foundations are more than 200 feet below water- and all were built out on the water with boats, barges and ships handling the men, machinery and materials.
