ONCE upon a time, not too many years
ago, a young man who wanted a strenuous outdoor life with plenty of plain food and hard work and a chance to save his money generally made tracks for a logging camp. This path might lead him to the Maine pine-and-spruce belt, to the Michigan hardwoods or to the fir-and-cedar forests of the Northwest.
Though the logging operations were totally different, each section, in its way, was a last frontier with the same simple pattern of life. Up in the timber was a woods camp of board barracks and cookshack and a railroad spur -all built to be moved as soon as the surrounding country was cleared of merchant. able trees -and someplace down the line there would be a logging town with pitted duckboard walks where a man could find whisky, a barbershop shave and trouble of almost every description.
