1765 a colony of Acadians arrived and settled
in what is now St. Martinville. Their descend-
ants still live here today. In the same year,
1765, the first Catholic church was established.
St. Martinville,
"The Shrine of the Evangeline,
immortalized in Longfellow's famous poem, is
the mecca for tourists, travelers and students
from all over the world. Here is the renowned
Evangeline Oak that is over 300 years old.

the state park at St. Martinville is the Acadian
House Museum, which is said to be the former
home of Gabriel, for whom Evangeline searched
for so many years. In the museum you will find

Acadian Americana in the Teche country.
