1954 Hurricane Pictorial Booklet Vintage Weather Disaster Providence RI TH8

On the morning of August 31, 1954, about 10:30,
a tropical hurricane struck Providence, roaring a symphony of
death and destruction. The waters of the Providence River rose
to a height of approximately 18 feet above the average low tide
level in three hours' time. The entire central business section,
an area nearly a mile in diameter, was flooded, as well as three
miles of the industrial area along the waterfront.
By rare good fortune, a photographic account was
made of the harrowing scenes and appalling damage in downtown
Providence. These pictures are reproduced here without any re-
touching to provide a graphic historical record for posterity, and
to portray the paralyzing blow that Providence has suffered and
survived.
At this time the business establishments affected
are working at their Herculean tasks of reconstruction needed for normal operation.
