MARTINVILLE\u003cbr\u003eSt. Martinville, one of the oldest towns in Louisiana, lies along the banks of the Bayou Teche in that part or southwest Louisiana known as the Evangeline, or the Acadian Country. The Acadians were people of French descent exiled by the British from Nova Scotia. Their descendants form the major part of the present population and they have greatly affected the customs and the language of this region. But the story of St. Martinville is not exclusively the story of the Acadians. Other settlers found refuge here, and they too contributed to the romance, legend and charm of the community.\u003cbr\u003eThe original settlers came directly from France, having begun to arrive in the region around the year 1755. The country was still wild, occupied by the hostile Attakapas Indians.
